Caniçal Aerial

The Visit Madeira pages for PR8 and for Baía d'Abra do not print a parking charge or a count of spaces. None is copied here.

Prainha is a separate stop in Caniçal. Visit Madeira says that beach has a car park. It does not price it.

SIGA’s page for this ride is titled Caniçal - Baía D'Abra. On 7 October 2026 it showed the old number 113 and the new number 702. The page says the timetable viewer is still in development, and it links sam_113.pdf. The PDF header is Companhia de Autocarros da Madeira.

The legend that could be read in that PDF dates the school period and the school holidays to 2024, and it says there are no trips on 25 December. The sheet mixes those columns with other CAM lines. No departure clock is copied here. Open the PDF before you travel.

Visit Madeira: 4 km out and 4 km back, moderate, 2h30, start and end Baía d'Abra / Casa do Sardinha, altitude 126 m / 23 m. The English page says 2:30 hours. The IFCN classified-trails table the same day says 4 km (+ 4 km return), Baía D'Abra to Cais do Sardinha, status ABERTO, managed by IFCN. Visit Madeira also says you can swim at Cais do Sardinha at the end of the walk. The peninsula is a Partial Nature Reserve on that page.

Both Visit Madeira pages say to pay on SIMplifica. They print 4,50 € for a visitor over 12, and an exemption for a visitor of 12 or under. The link is the SIMplifica service for classified walking routes, titled Pagamento de Taxas para acesso aos Percursos Pedestres Classificados. It is not a shop that sells only PR8.

The IFCN fee FAQ, English page last updated 2 June 2026, sets an individual trail other than PR1 at €4.50 in 2026. Booking is only on SIMplifica, including people who pay nothing. IFCN does not take the booking at its offices. A resident of the Autonomous Region of Madeira pays nothing with the resident card (it can be got on SIMplifica) and the citizen card, and still books. A child of 12 or under pays nothing and still has to be registered. A person with a disability of 60% or more, and one accompanying guardian, are exempt with proof, and they still book. A slot is an entry window. The FAQ allows about 15 minutes either side, a little more if you are walking trails in a row. Same-day booking depends on a place being left. If the trail is missing from SIMplifica, the FAQ gives two reasons: it is outside this fee system, or it is closed.

A refund or a new date is only when IFCN or the competent authority has closed or restricted the trail. Rain, a missed bus, or a change of mind does not get the money back. Ask within 10 working days of the booking date. The FAQ says to email IFCN. Visit Madeira prints (+351) 291 145 590 and ifcn@madeira.gov.pt. The SIMplifica service page lists 800 29 90 90 and 926 155 465, weekdays 9:00 to 18:00. The FAQ says IFCN does not run the SIMplifica portal.

Visit Madeira says the peninsula is semi-arid and exposed to northern winds, which is why the vegetation is low and there are no trees. The Baía d'Abra page says the same: cliffs and low plants, from that climate and those winds. That is the shade note. Neither page prints a wind speed that closes the path, or a volume of water to carry. The trail page does not mention a tap.

On the IFCN classified-trails page the safety lines say: do not walk alone; do not start in heavy rain, strong wind, hail, or snow; check the fire risk before you start; tell someone the path and when you expect to finish; finish before dark; carry some food and spare water; wear suitable clothes and shoes. Those lines cover the classified paths as a group. They are not a PR8-only rule with its own numbers.

The IFCN fee FAQ says a weather warning does not by itself close every classified path. A closure is a decision by the competent authority, IFCN among them, for safety, weather, risk on the ground, works, or something else of that kind. The status of each PR is the classified-trails table. Notices are on the IFCN avisos page.

On 7 October 2026 that table marked PR8 ABERTO. The avisos page carried a PR8 notice: recovery works need small signed diversions, with arrows, from 30 September 2026 for at least 270 days, and the path stays open. Follow the signs. Visit Madeira’s PR8 page says the same about temporary diversions and the arrows.

Diário de Notícias reported on 29 September 2026 that the works are a 360-day contract of 487.175,28 euros, co-financed by PRODERAM20/FEADER. That is a newspaper. The dates, and the fact that the path stays open, are the IFCN notice.

Visit Madeira places Prainha in Caniçal, near Ponta de São Lourenço. It is a beach of natural volcanic sand, copper-coloured, with the Dunas da Piedade. The page lists a restaurant, changing rooms and toilets, parasols and sun loungers, and a car park. It also says the peninsula is nine kilometres long. It does not print a price for the loungers or the car park.

The picture on this page is the NetMadeira camera, above the port and the start of the peninsula toward Ponta de São Lourenço. The narrow path at the far tip is not in the frame.
