The Porto Moniz natural pools are located on the northwestern tip of Madeira Island.
They were formed thousands of years ago when volcanic lava flows met the cool waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
The fast cooling process created hollow rock formations along the coastline.
Today, ocean water naturally fills these rock basins during high tides.
The pools span an area of about 3800 square metres. They are divided into two main sections along the town promenade. The eastern section near the Forte de São João Batista remains mostly in its original natural state. The western section features added concrete pathways and stairs to help visitors enter the water.
The water in the pools is salt water from the ocean. The natural tidal exchange keeps the water clean and fresh throughout the day. Visitors can view the Ilhéu Mole islet just offshore, which features a prominent lighthouse. The background is framed by steep green mountains covered in Laurissilva forest.
Porto Moniz is one of the most visited locations on the northern coast. The juxtaposition of the dark volcanic rock and the bright blue ocean water draws many visitors. The promenade connecting the two pool areas offers unobstructed views of the Atlantic Ocean. It is a pleasant place for a walk, even on days when the water is too rough for swimming.

Local Knowledge
Porto Moniz is a fantastic destination for a day trip. The contrast between the dark volcanic rock and the bright blue ocean is unique to this part of the island. After swimming, taking a walk along the promenade towards the Forte de São João Batista is a great way to spend the afternoon. I always recommend checking the camera feed first to see if the tide is high enough to fill the basins before heading out.
