The runway over the sea

If you are collecting someone, this picture answers one question: are aircraft moving on the runway at Santa Cruz? It does not answer the useful one, which is what time they land. That stays with the airline.

The runway is built out over the sea on concrete pillars. The public lookouts are outside the fence, and they are windy. A blurred, grey picture means the headland is a poor place to wait in a T-shirt.

If several flights arrive together, the terminal car park fills and people stop on the lookout road. Leave the VR1 before you slow down. The road toward the Santa Catarina café is the place to pull over, outside the fence. A jacket can stay in the car until you see whether the headland is clear. A bumpy landing is not your delay

The picture is the runway and the approach at Santa Cruz. It is not your gate, your bag, or the delay. When the wind comes over the hills, the landing bumps even if Funchal is calm. White water in the picture is the clue. The airline, not this page, decides if the flight turns around.

From about November to March the wind off the hills is more often strong enough to bump the landing. Summer is usually calmer. A jacket is worth having on the headland even when Funchal is warm.
