About this webcam

Crossing to the North Coast

The drive from central Funchal takes about 40 minutes, and the transition is always fascinating. As you emerge from the deep underground tunnels onto the plateau, which sits exactly 509 metres above the ocean, the temperature drops noticeably. The air feels cooler, and the landscape shifts to lush, green valleys.

Checking the live camera is the best way to plan your visit. The weather changes rapidly on this side of the island. If you see clear skies on the feed, it's a perfect time to explore the traditional thatched houses or head out on a hike.

Settlers from the Minho region of mainland Portugal first arrived here around 1550, and the village earned a royal decree on June 4, 1552. Today, Santana is most famous for its traditional triangular houses. The ingenious builders dropped the earthen floors into the solid ground to insulate against the weather, and used thick thatched roofs to deflect the strong winter rains. The straw is systematically replaced exactly every four years to prevent mold. It's a brilliant piece of practical engineering.

Microclimate: High-Altitude Coastal Plateau

  • Is the administrative center perched geographically on a large elevated coastal plateau rather than a traditional sea-level basin
  • Subjected to strong adiabatic cooling as dense moisture-laden northeastern trade winds systematically slam into the sheer coastal cliffs
  • Historically mandated the distinct A-frame thatched-roof architectural geometry built to deflect strong local horizontal rainfall events
  • Is the mandatory transport decision point prioritizing car traffic attempting the ascent toward the Achada do Teixeira large trailheads

About Madeira Webcams

We operate 50+ live HD cameras across Madeira and Porto Santo. I initially set this up because driving 45 minutes from sunny Funchal to Pico do Areeiro (1,818m) just to find thick fog was incredibly frustrating. Now, our 24/7 streams let you check exact conditions at the airport runway (LPMA), specific surf breaks at Paul do Mar, or the natural pools in Porto Moniz before you leave your hotel. The island's microclimates mean it can be pouring rain on the north coast while the south is perfectly sunny. Check the cams first, honestly, they will actually save you a wasted drive.
