Live temperatures, wind, and webcam views across the island, updated every 5 minutes. The weather in Funchal is rarely the weather up on the peaks.
Astronomical solar geometry matched to live webcam lines of sight
Elevation Dip: Sunrise at Pico do Areeiro (1,818m) occurs approximately 6 minutes earlier than sea level due to geometric horizon dip.
Panoramic coastal view toward Cabo Girão cliff (580m); direct sun dips behind the headland roughly 22 minutes before sea-level sunset in summer.
Sun sets behind the 580m cliff silhouette of Cabo Girão, ending direct light roughly 22 minutes early followed by vivid afterglow
Unobstructed western Atlantic horizon. Prime sunset viewing from September through April.
Unobstructed Atlantic ocean horizon with direct sea-surface sunset
Golden hour waves breaking against the cobblestone point into the setting sun.
Unobstructed western Atlantic horizon with golden reflections over the cobblestone point
Celebrated for extended daylight hours; evening light illuminates the basalt cliffs and historic pier arch.
Direct sunlight dips behind the western basalt promontory roughly 15 minutes before sea-level sunset
Summer solstice sunset window (late May to July) when sunset azimuth reaches 295° to 300° over the north sea.
Sun drops behind the central mountain amphitheater well before astronomical sunset
Sunrise breaks over the eastern sea of clouds (~6 min earlier due to horizon dip); sunset glows across Paúl da Serra.

Shielded from moist northeast trade winds by the 1,800-meter central mountain spine. Consistently records the highest temperatures and most sunshine hours on the island.
Positioned in the sheltered natural amphitheater of the capital. Minimal wind and warm ambient air throughout the year.
Rising toward the 580m sea cliff. Shows coastal fog clearance when morning haze lifts off the fishing bay.
Officially the sunniest coastal settlement in Madeira with near-zero annual fog days and warm ocean runoff.
Extremely warm afternoon temperatures with imported Moroccan sand beaches and calm enclosed waters.
Atlantic groundswells hitting towering volcanic sea cliffs. Often clear and warm with strong afternoon ocean reflection.
Directly exposed to winds sweeping past Ponta de São Lourenço and the airport runway. Moderate humidity with fast-moving cloud banks and gusty headlands.
Receives direct oceanic weather from the north Atlantic. Characterized by frequent passing showers, cooler breezes, sea spray on sea cliffs, and dense vegetation.
Elevations from 600 to 1,818 meters. During inversion days, the summits sit in dry, crystal-clear sunshine with 30% humidity while levada valleys below are smothered in thick grey mist.
Located 43 km northeast of Madeira with maximum relief of only 516 meters. Lacks the mountain barrier that causes heavy cloud formation, resulting in warm, dry weather and a 9-kilometer sandy beach.

Madeira steep terrain means a single forecast is never valid island-wide. Check the reading closest to your elevation and activity.
Ignore mountain cloud reports. The south coast sits in the shelter of the central peaks, usually staying 3 to 6°C warmer than the northern valleys.
Never assume the peaks are cloudy just because Funchal looks overcast. During temperature inversions, summits above 1,400m sit under clear blue skies above a sea of clouds.
Mid-elevation levadas trap Atlantic moisture between 600m and 1,200m. It might be dry on the coast, but inside Rabaçal or Ribeiro Frio expect cool damp air and wet footing.
Do not rely on calm weather in Funchal bay. The airport runway in Santa Cruz catches coastal winds blowing around the eastern point of the island.
How high mountains create completely different weather just a few miles apart.
Madeira central 1,800-meter mountain ridge splits the island in two. Moist north-east winds hit the northern cliffs and turn into clouds and passing showers around Santana and São Vicente. As that air pushes over the high ridge and drops down toward Funchal and the south coast, it warms up and dries out. It is common to have 24°C and warm sunshine in Funchal while the north coast sits under grey clouds at 14°C only 15 kilometers away.
Trade winds often create a thick cloud layer sitting between 800 and 1,400 meters. Levada walks in the mid-slopes can be surrounded by wet fog and dripping trees, while the high peaks at Pico do Areeiro (1,818m) and Paul da Serra sit in bright, warm sunshine above the clouds. Never judge mountain weather from the coast; always check the summit webcam before heading up.
Weather apps give general predictions, but a live camera shows you what the sky actually looks like right now. Because conditions on Madeira can shift within two kilometers or ten minutes, take ten seconds to check the camera before driving across the island.

Handy spot for watching the crosswinds and gusts that affect landings on the coastal stilt runway.
The driest peninsula on the island. Unimpeded ocean wind sweeping across low, treeless volcanic ridges.
Sheltered right underneath sheer north-coast cliffs. High humidity from coastal waterfalls and crashing surf.
Surrounded by near-vertical emerald cliffs. High moisture fuels lush vineyards and frequent passing mist bands.
Sits right at the base of the mountain cloud belt at 400m elevation. Noticeably cooler and damper than coastal Funchal.
Penha d'Águia stands over Maiata. Atlantic surf rollers sweep across the pebble beach.
Key trailhead for Pico Ruivo, Madeira highest peak. Sits near the top boundary of rising northern cloud decks.
Sole high-altitude flatland on the island. Strong uninterrupted winds, sudden cloud rolls, and gateway to western levada trails.
Heart of the 25 Fontes and Risco levada network. Often shrouded in 100% humidity while summits above enjoy sunshine.
Enclosed by near-vertical 1,000m ridge walls. Cool morning shadows with rapid temperature rises once the sun reaches the floor.
High vantage point on Porto Santo. Shows trade wind flow without the cloud accumulation that forms over Madeira tall mountains.
