About this webcam
Our airport here in Santa Cruz is quite a sight and definitely one of the most unique aviation hubs in the world. Because the ocean here is so deep, builders could not simply fill it with earth to expand the landing strip. Instead, they built a huge platform over the water.
Today, the runway sits on 180 concrete pillars. Each pillar is 3 meters in diameter and goes down 70 meters into the ocean. This artificial shelf extends 1020 meters over the water. Interestingly, these pillars now act as an artificial reef supporting local marine life. If you visit the observation deck early in the morning, bring a jacket because it gets quite cool and windy. You might also see some local lizards warming up on the concrete walls as the sun rises. Whether you are an aviation enthusiast or just waiting for friends to land, this location offers an incredible perspective on modern engineering blending with nature.
