Historic Surf Village
Jardim do Mar is a historic settlement situated along the western coastline, built on a natural volcanic shelf at the base of steep cliffs. Local residents maintain agricultural terraces that climb the slopes, an unusual feature for such a marine environment. A protective seawall, completed in 2003, guards the southern edge of the village, providing a wide artificial promenade where local crabs now populate the concrete crevices. The western location provides high sun exposure throughout the afternoon, while the ocean breeze provides natural cooling during the warmer summer months.
Surfing Heritage
The village holds significant historical importance in the international surfing community. The western swell was first documented by Gibus de Soultrait in 1977. Later, Evan Slater explored the break in 1994, bringing further attention to the area. This recognition led to the historic Billabong Challenge being held here in 1997, followed by a major international championship in 2001. These events established the volcanic reef break as a world-class destination.
Local Landmarks
The village retains much of its original architecture, including the historic chapel of Solar de Nossa Senhora da Piedade, which was built in 1736. Traditional stone pavements connect the narrow alleys, reflecting centuries of local settlement on this isolated shelf.
