About this webcam
Unlike most of the island's natural pebble shores, Machico offers a beautiful stretch of golden sand. This 125-meter-long haven was created in September 2008 when tons of sand were imported directly from Morocco by ship. It changed the feel of the bay, turning a quiet historical landing spot, where Portuguese discoverers first set foot in 1419, into a highly popular swimming destination.
Because the bay is protected by two large breakwaters, the water here is very calm, making it one of the safest spots for casual swimming and stand-up paddleboarding. The beach faces southeast, while Pico do Facho acts as a natural shield against the winds, keeping the area warm and pleasant throughout the day. It is a fantastic spot to relax after finishing the 13-kilometer ascent of the nearby Vereda do Larano hike.
