About this webcam
This elevated camera gives you a wide look at Caniçal, which serves as the primary commercial port for all of Madeira. From up here, you can watch the large cargo ships docking at the long breakwater. The contrast between the busy daily activity below and the quiet natural beauty of the Ponta de São Lourenço peninsula in the distance is truly striking.
The town itself sits right behind the harbor, characterized by small streets and white houses with orange roofs. It is a working town with a strong fishing heritage, meaning you will often see smaller local fishing boats navigating around the large commercial vessels. Watching the ships come and go provides a nice glimpse into the daily life of the island away from the main tourist centers.
What You Can See
The most prominent feature is the long breakwater that protects the inner harbor from the strong Atlantic swells. Beyond the working port zone, the green slopes of the Ponta de São Lourenço peninsula begin to rise, marking the easternmost edge of Madeira. On clear days, you can see the distinct volcanic rock formations that make this part of the coast so famous among walkers and photographers.
Parking and Access
Most visitors pass through Caniçal on their way to hike the famous trails of the eastern peninsula. However, stopping in the village for a relaxing lunch is highly recommended. You will find excellent seafood restaurants along the waterfront, serving fresh catches straight from the local boats. Trying the local black scabbardfish here is a wonderful experience. Please note that parking near the main port area is restricted to commercial vehicles only. If you want to explore the town, use the public parking lots located closer to the Whale Museum. The drive from Funchal takes roughly 30 minutes via the modern expressway.

Our local team spends a lot of time on the eastern end of Madeira, often grabbing lunch at the Caniçal seafood restaurants after hiking. We know that the wind here can change your plans quickly, which is why we set up this camera to help you check the harbor conditions before you make the drive.
