A Proper Island Town
Santa Cruz is one of those places that feels like a proper island town. I was just here last month, walking along the palm-lined promenade that stretches across the waterfront. It is very relaxing to grab a coffee near the pebble beach and watch the local boats come and go. The town itself is just a few minutes away from the airport, making it a very convenient stop when you arrive on the island or right before you leave. One of my favorite things about Santa Cruz is how simple it is to access everything. You can stroll past the historic Igreja de São Salvador, which has beautiful stonework right in the center of town. If you want to take a swim, Praia das Palmeiras offers a great pebble beach with exceptionally clear water. For parking, there is a large underground facility right beneath the main square, which I found to be the easiest option during the busier midday hours. The town has maintained a very authentic, local feel compared to some of the busier tourist hubs on the south coast.
