Welcome to one of the most visually striking locations on the island. Seixal Beach is famous for its natural, fine black volcanic sand. It sits right at the base of very steep, bright green mountains that drop straight down into the Atlantic Ocean. Driving here from Funchal takes about fifty minutes along the ER101 coastal highway. The scenic drive along the north coast is a wonderful experience all on its own.
The small town of Seixal has a long, quiet history tied directly to the sea and local agriculture. For many years, the steep mountains made this northern coastal area difficult to reach from the main towns. It was mostly visited by dedicated locals who knew the area well. Today, the improved coastal roads bring more visitors to enjoy the scenery, but the village retains its original, peaceful character.

When guests ask about visiting the north coast, I always send them here first. The black sand is incredibly soft, but it absorbs heat quickly in direct sunlight. The parking area by Clube Naval fills by 9:00 AM during the busy summer months. If you arrive later in the day, simply park up by the main road and enjoy the walk down the hill. Keep in mind that the water here is colder than the southern beaches, making it very refreshing after a hike.
