I always tell our guests that a trip to Madeira isn't complete without seeing the natural volcanic pools of Porto Moniz. The porous rock meets deep offshore currents to create a naturally protected and beautiful swimming area. The coastal cliffs feature steep drops, while the underwater rocks help create gentle waves inside the pools. The town itself was founded by Francisco Moniz, who built Ponta do Tristão back in 1475, and gained its formal status on October 31, 1835. Today, it is a peaceful parish of exactly 2,528 residents, many of whom make the daily commute to Funchal.
When you visit, make sure to look up towards the stunning Fanal trails. They climb 480 meters right overhead into the laurel forest and often sit magically above the coastal clouds. You can spot salt-resistant succulents clinging to the steep cliffs and endemic bird species riding the ocean updrafts. Just a short walk away, the historic stone pier offers a charming spot to see small local fishing boats and watch fishermen bringing in their daily catch. It is simply a wonderful place to swim, watch the ocean, and truly relax.
