Calheta Sand Beach
What does this picture show, and what does it leave out?
Mild coastal temperatures and clear views across the shoreline and harbor.
It shows what is in front of the camera. It does not show the rest of the island.
Cloud cover is high, so paths and rock can be wet. Wear shoes with grip and pack a light rain shell.
Looking at the feed before driving the VR1 and VE3 west from Funchal tells you immediately whether the southwest coast is sitting in its usual sunny rain shadow or whether high cloud has spilled down from Paul da Serra. You can read the water surface inside the breakwaters to confirm that the swimming zone is flat and calm, even on days when Atlantic groundswell breaks white against the outer rock armour.
You can also gauge how busy the sand and sunbed zones look by mid-morning. On warm weekends and summer holidays the two beaches fill early, so checking the live picture helps you decide whether to set out before 10:00 or aim for a late-afternoon swim when shadows lengthen along the western cliff.
