About this webcam
If you ask me what makes Paul do Mar worth the drive, I will tell you it is all about the atmosphere down at the water's edge.
This little fishing village is squeezed onto a narrow strip of land between the Atlantic Ocean and some very steep
400-meter cliffs. Because those cliffs block the northern winds, it stays much warmer and sunnier down here than in most
other parts of the island. It is actually one of the sunniest spots on Madeira, drawing visitors who want to escape the
clouds up in the mountains.
When you look at the webcam, you are seeing the main waterfront area. The waves here can get quite large, making it a very popular spot for the local surfing community. The ocean floor drops off quickly, so the swells come in with a lot of energy before breaking over the rocky reef. If you are planning to walk along the concrete promenade, always keep an eye on the sea. Sometimes, especially in winter, the ocean washes right over the wall. I always tell guests to grab a spot at one of the local bars, order a drink, and just watch the water. It is the best way to spend a late afternoon. There is a very relaxed, bohemian feel to the village, with locals and tourists alike gathering to watch the sunset color the sky.

I have spent years helping visitors plan great sunset trips and coastal hikes around Madeira's warmer western shores.
