Welcome to Madalena do Mar, a peaceful village on the sunny southwest coast of Madeira. We are famous for our large banana plantations that stretch right down to the ocean. When you look at the live camera, you can see the long pebble beach and the sea wall that protects our promenade. It is usually much quieter here than in the big towns, making it a great spot for a relaxing afternoon.
Madalena do Mar is small but has some beautiful spots to explore just steps away from the pebble beach. You can visit the Igreja de Santa Maria Madalena, which is the local parish church, or walk the Rota da Banana, a famous walking path through the dense banana plantations. You might also spot the Old Sugar Cane Mill ruins, which are remnants of the village's historical sugar production.
Parking is usually easy to find along the main road, but it can fill up on weekend afternoons when locals come down for lunch. If you plan to swim, always check the camera first to see how the waves look. The water gets deep quite quickly, so it is best for confident swimmers when the sea is calm. After a walk along the promenade, you will find a few excellent local seafood restaurants right across the street serving fresh limpets and local fish.
