Santana, the thatched houses, and the north-coast camera
The triangular houses are in the town. The camera shows the weather on that side of the island before you drive.

Santana is the north-coast town known for the small triangular thatched houses, the palheiros. They are a real street of buildings, not a theme park, and they sit in a place that is wetter than Funchal. The Santana camera is the check before the drive. If it is raining there and Ponta do Sol is bright, you are choosing the wet side on purpose. That choice is explained in the north coast gets the cloud first.
The laurel forest walks start in this part of the island. The forest note is the laurel forest. The trails directory lists the routes. Santana is also a reasonable base if you are doing Pico Ruivo from Achada and do not want to sleep in Funchal. The drive from the city is over the ridge or along the north coast. Both are slower than the kilometer count.
