Light on Madeira: look at the camera before you pack a tripod
The ridge, Cabo Girão, and Ponta do Sol are three different lights. A gray frame saves you the drive.
·

The photographs people want are usually the ridge above cloud, the cliff at Cabo Girão, and a bright southwest town. Each has a camera, and the camera is the honest preview.
Pico do Arieiro at dawn is the ridge. If it is gray, stay in bed. The timing note is sunrise. Cabo Girão is the vertical drop. Morning cruise traffic is the crowd, not the light. Ponta do Sol is the warm pocket when Funchal is flat and gray.
You do not need a special lens for any of this. You need the right coast. The split is the peaks note. North-coast green, Santana and Faial, is a different picture and a wetter one. Open Santana if that is the day you wanted.
