Sunrise: Arieiro, or the north-east coast
The ridge is the famous dawn. Porto da Cruz is the one you can do without a mountain road. Check the camera either way.

Two sunrises are worth planning. Pico do Arieiro, if the camera is clear the evening before and you are willing to drive the mountain road in the dark. Cloud at dawn wastes the trip. The how to read that frame note is the check, and the PR1 car note matters only if you intend to walk, not if you are only watching the sun.
Porto da Cruz is the lower option. Alagoa faces east under Penha de Águia. You see whether the bay is clear without climbing to 1,800 meters. Achada do Teixeira is the other high start, useful if you are walking toward Pico Ruivo rather than standing at Arieiro.
It is cold at the top in every month. Leave Funchal earlier than a map's driving time, because the last bends are slow in the dark.
