About this webcam
Welcome to the North Coast
If you are planning to drive up here from Funchal, the trip takes about forty minutes, and the scenery along the way is very rewarding. This webcam points toward Praia da Alagoa, the main beach area in Porto da Cruz. You will notice the dark sand mixed with round pebbles, which is typical for this part of the island. During the summer months, the sandy area gets larger, making it a fine spot to lay out a towel. I always tell our guests to pack water shoes because getting in and out of the ocean over the stones can be a bit tricky on bare feet.
The village itself is incredibly peaceful, full of small local cafes where you can grab a quick espresso or a fresh pastry for less than two euros. Just keep in mind that the ocean here is open to the north Atlantic, so the waves can be quite strong. It is a good idea to check the camera before your drive to see if the water looks calm enough for a swim or if it is better suited for the surfers. There is a nice promenade that wraps around the bay, offering a pleasant walk even if you decide not to get in the water.
