Why the peaks are in cloud when Funchal is sunny
A Funchal forecast does not describe Pico do Arieiro. Open the camera for the place you are driving to.

Madeira is a steep ridge in the northeast trades. Moist air hits the north, rises, and drops cloud on the peaks and the north coast. Funchal and much of the south sit on the drier side. In summer the cloud often forms a layer part-way up, so the coast can be gray while the summit is above it in sun, or the reverse.
Open the camera for the drive, not a single island icon. Pico do Arieiro before the ER202. Ponta do Sol for the southwest pocket. Porto Moniz before the north-west pools. Santana for the forest side. A clear summit at dawn can be gone by early afternoon. Take a layer. The parking lot is much colder than the seafront.
How to read the Arieiro frame is its own note: the Arieiro camera. Month by month is when to come.
