There is no bad month to be in Funchal, and there are plenty of bad mornings to be on the ridge or in a north-coast pool. The season changes the odds. It does not replace a picture.
Late spring and summer give the best chance of a clear dawn at Pico do Arieiro, and the cloud still climbs by afternoon. Winter and early spring bring more rain on the north and bigger swell, so Porto Moniz is more often a view than a swim. Ponta do Sol is the south-coast pocket that stays useful in dull weeks. Christmas and New Year fill Funchal. The flower festival fills Avenida Arriaga in spring. Cruise days fill the harbor year-round. Check Pontinha that morning.
