Viewpoints worth the drive, and the camera for each
Cabo Girão, the Arieiro ridge, and Penha de Águia from Porto da Cruz. Skip the ones you cannot check.
·

Three viewpoints earn the drive if the picture is clear.
Cabo Girão. The glass platform on the cliff west of Funchal. The camera shows whether the view is open or in sea mist. Cruise mornings fill the parking lot. Go early.
Pico do Arieiro. The high one. The camera is the whole decision. Gray frame, do not bother. The walk from here is a different plan, in which camera before a walk.
Porto da Cruz toward Penha de Águia. Lower, and often the north-coast view when you do not want the mountain road. Alagoa is the frame.
Eira do Serrado, above Curral das Freiras, has no camera on this site. If the Arieiro frame is in cloud, the valley rim is often in the same cloud. Do not collect viewpoints. Pick two and look first.
