Funchal's Vibrant Waterfront
Welcome to the Funchal waterfront and the lively Praça do Mar. This modern plaza is home to the popular CR7 Museum, dedicated to the achievements of Madeira's most famous football player, Cristiano Ronaldo. Looking through the live feed, you get a clear view of the open pedestrian spaces, the palm trees lining Avenida Sá Carneiro, and the busy harbor where cruise ships dock almost every day. The location is very popular with visitors walking from the cruise terminal into the city center, taking just a short five-minute walk to reach the museum entrance.
The wide plaza you see today is actually a relatively new addition to the city. Following big storms on February twenty in the year twenty ten, local authorities initiated the Frente Mar project. They collected about three hundred forty thousand cubic meters of mountain soil and rock to reclaim six hectares of land from the Atlantic Ocean. This large platform expanded the waterfront, creating a beautiful recreational area that locals and visitors use daily for walking, cycling, and meeting friends. The area feels very open and receives plenty of sunshine throughout the year, making it a great spot to relax and take photos.
