About this webcam
Avenida Arriaga serves as the central artery for pedestrian life in downtown Funchal, stretching from the historic Sé Cathedral all the way down to the Rotunda do Infante. The wide sidewalks here are paved with traditional black and white Portuguese cobblestones, known locally as calçada, arranged in intricate maritime and geometric patterns. Because this avenue is mostly closed to regular car traffic, with only local buses, taxis, and delivery vehicles permitted in the central lane, it is a safe and relaxed place to walk and enjoy the city atmosphere.
During the late spring and early summer months, the southern side of the street bursts into color as the purple Jacaranda trees come into full bloom. These trees drop their flowers to create a bright purple carpet on the cobblestones. The northern side is lined with yellow Tipuanas, offering a thick, green canopy that provides much-needed shade on hot August afternoons. You will see a steady flow of locals and visitors moving between the various shops, museums, and historical buildings, including the 19th-century Baltazar Dias Theater, which features an impressive Italianate interior.
