PR1 Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo: 2026 Permits, Shuttles, and Parking Reality
Official 2026 guide to SIMplifica permits, €4.50 versus €10.50 fee tiers, €5 lower versus €20 upper parking, and one-way shuttle logistics between Arieiro and Ruivo.

We drove our rental car up the twisting road toward Pico do Arieiro at 5:30 in the morning. The dashboard thermometer dropped to four degrees Celsius, cold wind buffeted the doors, and the small upper parking lot next to the military radar sphere was already packed solid. A police officer stood near the barrier directing late vehicles down to the lower plateau lot, eight hundred meters below the trailhead. If you arrive expecting an effortless, free parking spot right beside the stone steps, you will quickly face a stressful morning.
Walking the PR1 mountain ridge between Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo has transformed under new regional management. The Madeira regional conservation institute (IFCN) now enforces mandatory digital bookings through the official SIMplifica portal, parking rules have split into two distinct fee zones, and treating the trail as an out-and-back day walk is no longer practical for most hikers. Beyond the Miradouro da Pedra Rija at kilometer 1.3, the trail is designated for one-way traffic toward Pico Ruivo, meaning you need a verified return plan before you take your first step.
The Two-Tier Permit System on SIMplifica
All permits must be booked in advance through the official regional government portal at simplifica.madeira.gov.pt. There are no ticket booths on the mountain, rangers do not accept cash, and hiking without a digital voucher risks fines between 50 and 250 euros. When booking, you will encounter two distinct ticket tiers:
- Partial Walk to Pedra Rija (4.50 euros): This permit covers the 1.3-kilometer walk from the radar station to the Miradouro da Pedra Rija and the return climb back to the parking lot (2.6 kilometers round trip). It is ideal for sunrise watchers and casual walkers who want panoramic views without tackling vertical metal ladders.
- Full Linear Crossing to Pico Ruivo (10.50 euros): This permit covers the full mountain traverse across PR1, connecting through PR1.1 or PR1.2 down to Achada do Teixeira. Children aged 12 and under walk for free, but you must still reserve an online slot for each child.
Permits are issued for specific 30-minute entry windows. If your preferred time slot appears fully booked weeks in advance, do not panic. Hikers regularly cancel their slots, and released tickets return automatically to the SIMplifica portal roughly two hours before each time window. Licensed commercial mountain guiding companies also hold reserved allocations if independent slots remain unavailable.
Summit Parking: Upper Radar Lot vs Lower Plateau Lot
Parking at Pico do Arieiro is strictly divided into two distinct zones with separate fee rules:
- Upper Radar Lot: Located directly beside the visitor center and trailhead. This lot has an automated barrier and enforces a strict two-hour maximum stay. The rate is 1.20 euros per 15 minutes, which equals 4.80 euros per hour. Leaving a vehicle here during a full six-hour mountain traverse results in steep financial penalties.
- Lower Plateau Lot: Located roughly 800 meters down the mountain along the ER202 road. This lot charges a flat fee of 5.00 euros per day. Hikers parking here must walk 15 minutes uphill along the road shoulder in pre-dawn darkness to reach the trailhead, so a reliable headlamp is essential.
Do not park along the dirt verges or asphalt shoulders of the ER202 access road. Police patrol the mountain daily and issue heavy fines for vehicles with tires touching the roadway.
Return Transport from Achada do Teixeira
The classic PR1 traverse ends at the mountain shelter below Pico Ruivo. From there, the official descent follows the PR1.2 footpath for 2.8 kilometers down to the parking area at Achada do Teixeira above Santana. Because your rental car remains parked on the southern side of the central ridge at Pico do Arieiro, you need transport to close the gap. A return hike back across PR1 covers 14 kilometers with more than 1,200 meters of cumulative climbing, which leaves most visitors exhausted with knee strain.
You have three realistic options for returning from Achada do Teixeira:
- Pre-Booked Traditional Taxi: Official taxis wait at the Teixeira parking area during peak morning and afternoon hours. The drive back to Pico do Arieiro takes roughly 65 kilometers around the mountain base and costs between 80 and 100 euros for up to four passengers.
- Ride-Hailing Apps (Bolt): A Bolt ride from Teixeira to Arieiro typically costs around 43 to 55 euros. However, mobile cellular reception on the northern slopes of Teixeira is notoriously weak, and drivers in Santana may take 25 minutes to arrive.
- Morning Hiker Shuttles: Several local transport companies run one-way passenger vans between Funchal, Pico do Arieiro, and Achada do Teixeira. Seats cost between 20 and 25 euros per person and provide predictable return schedules.
