Watching landings at Madeira airport
The famous approach is real. The public view is the cameras and the places the airport actually allows. Do not climb a fence.
·

The approach to runway 05 is the one people film: the aircraft comes in over the sea, low, toward the cliff and the platform. Runway 23 is the other direction. Which one is in use depends on the wind, not on a blog post.
Start with the airport cameras. If you can see the threshold and the sea, you will understand the approach better than from a map. Then use the arrivals list on the aviation page so you are not waiting for a flight that is two hours late. The camera will not name the airline.
Spot from places that are open to the public. Do not cross a fence, stand on a road, or point a laser at an aircraft. The airport's own rules apply. Santa Cruz town is the place to wait with a coffee if the cloud is on the runway and you would rather look again in an hour. The condition note is what the cameras show.
