Complete Funchal Guide
History & Culture
Funchal, founded in 1421, is the capital and principal city of Madeira. The name derives from the abundant "funchais" (fennel) that early settlers found in the area. The city developed rapidly as an important commercial port, particularly during the 15th and 16th centuries, when it became an essential stop on trade routes between Europe and the Americas.
Today, Funchal is known for its distinctive architecture, which blends traditional Madeiran styles with Portuguese colonial influences. The historic centre preserves many buildings from the 15th-18th centuries, including the Sé Cathedral, built in 1514, and the Palácio de São Lourenço, a former fortress that now serves as the official residence of the President of the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
Geography & Climate
Funchal is situated on the southern coast of Madeira, in a natural bay protected by the surrounding mountains. The city extends from sea level to approximately 750 metres altitude, creating a unique amphitheatre-like urban landscape. This privileged location provides the city with a subtropical oceanic microclimate, with mild temperatures throughout the year.
Average temperatures vary between 16°C in winter and 23°C in summer, rarely dropping below 13°C or rising above 28°C. Relative humidity generally remains between 60-70%, whilst precipitation is more frequent between October and March. The prevailing winds are the northeast trade winds, which help moderate temperatures and provide a refreshing breeze.
