Welcome to Ribeira Brava, a lively town on Madeira's southern coast. It is only a twenty-five-minute drive west of Funchal on the VR1 highway, making it very accessible for a day trip. The town gets its name from the fast-flowing river that runs right through the center. The river is safely channeled today, but it is easy to see how it shaped this deep valley over the centuries. A large breakwater creates a calm, protected swimming zone right off the volcanic pebble beach. If you watch the live feed, you can usually see people strolling on the oceanfront promenade or grabbing a coffee at the local cafes facing the Atlantic. Ribeira Brava is one of the oldest settlements on the island, dating back to the early fifteenth century, and it was officially elevated to town status in 1928. During the early days of colonization, the town was an important agricultural center, especially for sugarcane production. Small boats would dock at the pebble beach to load sugar and transport it to Funchal, as overland routes were difficult before the VR1 highway was built.
