Funchal
The ocean temperatures here range from 18 degrees Celsius in late winter to a comfortable 24 degrees by September. The complex is well sheltered from the prevailing north winds by the high cliffs of Funchal, making it feel warmer than the exposed north coast. However, during strong southern swells, the direct ocean access stairs are closed by the lifeguards for safety, though the main saltwater pools remain open.
Built Into the Volcanic Rock
The Ponta Gorda Bathing Complex is engineered directly into the steep volcanic cliffs along the western edge of the Lido promenade. Because the coastline here has no natural sand, the complex uses wide concrete terraces extending into the Atlantic to provide sunbathing space. The facility features a fifty-meter main saltwater pool that is regularly refreshed by the ocean tide, alongside a shallow circular children's pool equipped with small slides. It is a highly managed environment where locals gather for morning laps before the midday heat sets in.Direct Atlantic Access
Beyond the structured pools, sturdy concrete stairs with thick stainless steel handrails lead directly down into the open ocean. The water depth drops off quickly to over ten meters, so this access is only meant for capable swimmers. During the peak summer months, you will often see a floating wooden pontoon anchored about forty meters offshore. Swimming out to this platform is a daily ritual for regular visitors. The seabed here is primarily large volcanic boulders, which keeps the water clear and provides excellent visibility for spotting local marine life like bream and damselfish. The Tidal Pool Feature
At the far eastern edge of the complex lies a natural rock pool enclosed by a low concrete wall. At high tide, waves wash over the barrier, flushing the pool with fresh seawater. It offers a sheltered spot to feel the raw energy of the ocean without battling the offshore currents. While the complex provides extensive amenities including lifeguards, a first-aid station, and a small cafe, the natural elements of the Atlantic remain the main attraction.Local Swimmer
I swim at the Ponta Gorda complex almost every morning from May through October. The best time to secure a sun lounger on the lower concrete terrace is right when the gates open at 8:30 AM. I always check this webcam before walking down from the Estrada Monumental, just to see if the southern swell is hitting the stairs. If the yellow flag is flying on the pontoon, I know the water will be a bit rougher than usual. It saves me the steep walk down if the ocean access is closed for the day.Highlights
